Large Dog Door FAQs
Our large dog flaps are ideal for dogs with up to 630mm shoulder height. They have an overall size of 366mm x 441mm and will require a hole of 318mm x 391mm. That should be plenty enough for most breeds of dog!
Our large dog flaps are suitable for large dog breeds but may be a squeeze for giant breeds. Examples of large dog breeds include Afghan, Airedale, Akita, Alaskan Malamute, Bearded Collie, Belgian Sheepdog, Bernese Mountain Dog, Black Russian Terrier, Boxer, Bullmastiff, Collie, Dalmatian, Dogue de Bordeaux, English Setter, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever.
Giant breeds may be able to squeeze through but we wouldn’t recommend it!
Installing a large doggie door is simple. Each door comes with a template that you can use to mark out the hole. Measure twice, cut once. Make sure to cut the door or wall to the exact measurements, trim the edges of the cut, use filler to fill any gaps and attach each side of the door using the included fixings.
If you have a glass door, you’ll need to consult a glazier to cut a hole or provide a door panel with the hole already cut.
You will not need specialist tools to install your dog flap. Any competent DIYer can fit one of these doors. Each large dog flap comes with full fitting instructions and a template you can use for measuring.
You’ll need a saw, drill, craft knife, ruler and a screwdriver but that’s it. All you need to do is follow the instructions outlined above to fit the door in all but glass doors. You’ll need a glazier for that!
Yes, you can lock these dog flap doors. Closer Pet’s range of large dog flaps use a manual locking mechanism to keep it closed. Simply slide the shield over the flap to keep the weather out and your dog in. It’s a very simple system!
No, there are no strength requirements to use our dog flaps. Each flap is incredibly light despite being robust. Small dogs and even cats can use them. The design is such that the flap is very easy to use but can keep the majority of the wind and the rain outside.
We know of many smaller dogs and cats that use large dog flaps daily without any issues!
