Enrichment Activities for Dogs

Dogs need more than just walks and food to stay happy. Without regular mental and physical stimulation, our four-legged friends can become bored, frustrated, or even anxious. Luckily, there are endless enrichment activities for dogs that can keep their tails wagging, whether you're indoors or out – and these are some of our very favourite enrichment ideas for dogs.

Automatic treat dispensers

Dogs love surprises and snacks, so why not both? Our automatic dog feeders are great for feeding your pet at a specified time, of course, but can also be used for treats. And for dogs that spend time alone, such as when you’re at work, this adds a bit of excitement and variety to their day, breaking up long stretches of downtime.

Dog water fountains

Hydration is essential, but some dogs require a gentle reminder to drink enough. Our dog water fountains offer a gentle, continuous flow of filtered water that can be far more tempting than a still bowl. The movement keeps it fresher for longer, and many dogs are naturally curious about running water. As a result, they drink more and stay healthier. It's a small change with a big benefit, especially in warmer months or for active breeds.

Doggy doors and garden access

If you have a secure outdoor space, giving your dog controlled access via a doggy door can be hugely enriching. Letting them come and go is great if your dog gets easily bored; they can go out for a sniff or lie down in the sun any time they like, even when you’re occupied. For many dogs, simply having the option to step outside when they feel like it can help reduce boredom and restlessness indoors.

Frozen food puzzles

Frozen enrichment requires a little preparation but is perfect for warmer days or to switch things up. Try using silicone moulds or ice cube trays filled with broth, biscuits, vegetables, wet food or a mix of all of the above and offer them to your dog as a lickable puzzle. Some dogs will take their time; others will figure out how to bash and crunch their way through. You can probably guess what your dog will do already!

Hide and seek with toys

How about some fun indoor activities for dogs? You don’t need a garden or fancy kit to give your dog a good challenge. Ask your dog to sit and wait (or get someone to hold them), then hide their favourite toy somewhere in the house. Give the release cue and watch them hunt it down. If they’re new to it, start easy – behind a cushion or under a blanket – then work up to tougher spots. You can even rotate toys so the game feels fresh each time.

Indoor obstacle courses

This one might be a little too much, but bear with us.

Rainy day? Turn your living room into a doggy playground with cushions, chairs, brooms and blankets. You can guide your dog through a makeshift tunnel, over a jump, or around a cushion slalom. Not only does this provide physical enrichment, but it also sharpens their focus and strengthens your bond as you work together.

Chasing bubbles

Yes, really: bubbles. Silly, yes, but many dogs go wild for them, and it’s a brilliant outlet for natural prey drive in a non-destructive way. Use dog-safe bubble solutions (some even come in bacon or peanut butter scents, believe it or not) and blow a few into the air to get things started. Most dogs will instinctively jump and chase, and once they realise it’s a game, the excitement really kicks in.

Digging boxes

If your dog loves to dig, a designated digging box can save your flower beds and your sanity. Fill a sturdy container with sand or soil, then bury some toys or treats for your dog to discover. It's great sensory and physical enrichment, especially for terriers or breeds with strong hunting instincts. You can use this both indoors and out (just be prepared for a bit of mess).

Playdates with other dogs

While toys and puzzles are great, nothing quite beats a romp with a fellow four-legged friend. Dog playdates offer fantastic social enrichment, teach communication skills and help to burn off energy in a way no human can match. Ideally, pair dogs with similar play styles and temperaments, and supervise at first, especially if they’re new to each other.
